Details of mature corn root structure

Rhizodermis is replaced by exodermis

Endodermis walls are lignified & suberized

An enlarged view from previous illustration of corn (Zea mays) root. Note that the rhizodermis is breaking down and is being replaced by a prominent single-layered exodermis, which becomes the outermost protective layer of the root. The exodermis cells are dead and their walls are lignified and suberized. Also note that the endodermis cells have thickened and suberized inner tangential and radial walls (the secondary state of the tissue).

Identify rhizodermis with root hairs, exodermis, cortex, sclerenchyma, endodermis, pericycle, primary phloem and xylem.
